First, you must lure them into your house.
Leave a memory at your doorstep.
Make sure it is a dark one.
They will sniff it and come
running, licking their lips.
Leave your door open.
Go to that messy kitchen
of your emotions
And boil some water.
Take out your new tea cups,
and your best tea.
Don’t panic when you hear them
Sneaking into your house
And breaking things.
By the time you have poured
The hot water into your cup,
Your terrors will be sitting at your kitchen table,
Smiling with yellow jaws.
Take a deep breath.
Smell the tea brewing in your cup,
And walk towards your terrors.
Look into the void of their eyes
Until you can see
Your mirror reflection.
Then smile, as if meeting an old friend.
(This will confuse them,
Make them shrink in their seats)
Finally, let the kindness in your voice
Surprise them, when you ask,
“Would you like some tea?”
Leave a memory at your doorstep.
Make sure it is a dark one.
They will sniff it and come
running, licking their lips.
Leave your door open.
Go to that messy kitchen
of your emotions
And boil some water.
Take out your new tea cups,
and your best tea.
Don’t panic when you hear them
Sneaking into your house
And breaking things.
By the time you have poured
The hot water into your cup,
Your terrors will be sitting at your kitchen table,
Smiling with yellow jaws.
Take a deep breath.
Smell the tea brewing in your cup,
And walk towards your terrors.
Look into the void of their eyes
Until you can see
Your mirror reflection.
Then smile, as if meeting an old friend.
(This will confuse them,
Make them shrink in their seats)
Finally, let the kindness in your voice
Surprise them, when you ask,
“Would you like some tea?”

Wed, December 14, 2005 - 8:16 PMyeah, I guess I was facing a few terrros in the days before writing this poem. But it was partially inspired by some of the posts on this tribe. So I thought it was the best place to post it.

Re: How to Invite Your Existential Terrors to Tea
Thu, August 31, 2006 - 9:58 AMIt reminds me of old observation: We despise most in others what we don't like about ourselves.
THANK you for the eloquent reminder...
